Supporting the handicapped families in Buwali Village, Busukuma sub-county- Uganda

There are a number of vulnerable handicapped children in Buwali Village among other villages in Busukuma Sub-county of Wakiso District, Uganda, a number of these live with very impoverished relatives and while others are adopted by poor guardians and among most of these poor relatives and guardians are widows while others are living with HIV/AIDS. Nevertheless these needy children need a life and good future and to achieve this Set Them Free International seeks for supportive partners and sponsors to support many of the handicapped children at school through school fees support, scholastic materials support and home care basics or clothes to put on.

One of our needy mothers Gertrude, an HIV-Positive widow with four children two of whom are mentally disabled. Gertrude is unable to take sufficient care of these children and can’t afford to take them to school.

Gertrude’s Children Sekanabi is 15 years old has Down’s Syndrome and her second son Sajjalabene  9 years also has a form of retardation both of them are not in school because the local schools cannot maintain children like them with special needs. So she is struggling with the school fees, scholastic materials and general utilities of her only able bodied son  Musa 7 years in pre-primary school. The youngest child Luka 4 years old is not her biological son but was abandoned by his parents and Gertrude does not know where to locate them so she also looks after this boy.

Gertrude does not have a stable source of income since she does potter work, manual labour and digs on other people’s farms to get something for herself and the children to live by. Notwithstanding the fact that Gertrude is not in the good state of health and also does not have a lot of physical energy to handle such demanding conditions. However Set Them Free International is seeking for support of her children take them to Guluddene Unit a school for children with learning disabilities. This school is clean, green, well-equipped and it has very qualified teachers and attendants. Guluddene Unit is a school for children with learning disabilities, autism, physical impairment and mentally retarded children under Mengo hospital in Uganda is a branch of the occupational therapy department established in 1985 under Mengo Hospital, Kampala. It is a Christian non-governmental organization under the church of Uganda. In 1990, the school at Mengo started a sister school at Guluddene which is located in Busuukuma sub-county, Wakiso district.

As Set Them Free International, realize that a school like this is the best place for Gertrude’s children who have special needs to get an education and skills development for a better livelihood. They need School fees of  £25 per Month, other needs are medical care, food, beddings, mosquito net, wears and transport.

We welcome any financial support in this case to this family and many others of such kind in Buwali and other villages in Busukuma Sub-county.
